KANSAS CITY — There is a moment in every Chiefs game this month when the offense stops looking for the perfect call and starts looking for the fastest one.
It arrives at roughly the 11-minute mark of the fourth quarter. Kansas City has run 14 no-huddle snaps in that window over the last three weeks and averaged 7.9 yards on them, the best mark in the league by more than a full yard.
"We are not inventing anything," the offensive coordinator said. "We are just refusing to let them substitute."
The wrinkle works because of personnel. Keeping 11 personnel on the field forces nickel looks, and the Chiefs have hunted those matchups relentlessly with motion at the snap.
Defenses will adjust. Until they do, the closing minutes belong to the team that has practiced them the most.
